Your brain is continually looking for bad news and for scary situations. As soon as it finds the scariest news, it fixates on it and shoots that information into memory storage. Later, it reactivates that information as soon as a similar situation or signal arises.

Here’s another interesting little fact: once the amydala sounds the alarm that it’s found a negative event, this negative event will immediately be stored in long-term memory. On the other hand, when a positive event is experienced, we need to pay attention to it for at least a dozen seconds before it transfers from short-term memory into long-term memory.

All of this makes us super sensitive to potential threats (even imaginary ones) and hypersensitive to negativity.

You might be wondering what you can do about this little neurological issue. Not to worry because there is something you can do. You have an element of control over what information you are exposed to. Here’s a metaphor to help explain.

Imagine that salt represents fearful thoughts and negative information whereas a container represents loving thoughts and positive information. Imagine taking a big scoop of salt and placing it in a little tiny container of water. Then, you stir the mixture around and take a big drink….gross! If you have big scoop of salt in a little container, the experience is negative, leaving you thirsty.

Now imagine taking that same scoop of salt and instead placing it in a huge container of water, stirring it around, and taking a big drink. Not so bad, is it? It’s the same amount of salt, but the experience of tasting the salt isn’t nearly as potent because it’s diluted in a lot more water.

So here’s what you can do: open your mind up to positive experiences, loving thoughts, and helpful information so that you can dilute the negative experiences and fearful thoughts.
