How exactly does one discover their real purpose in life?  I’m not talking about your job or goals, I’m talking about the very reason you came here.

I’ve run across a few people that don’t believe that they have a purpose. I know what that feels like, I used to be one of those people. The funny thing is that even if you don’t believe you don’t have a purpose, that won’t stop you from discovering it.  Purpose is a little bit like gravity, it’s there whether you know it or not, and it’s always exerting it’s influence on your life.

There are many different ways to find your purpose; this is one of the simplest ways to find it.

  1. Get some paper or open up a word processing document on your computer.
  2. Be in a place where you are alone and will not be interrupted
  3. Write at the top “what is my true purpose in life?”
  4. Write down the first thing that comes to mind.  Jot down words or phrases or draw out images.
  5. Keep writing for about 15-20 minutes, by then you should start to get past the social conditioning and mind clutter.
  6. If you feel the urge to quite, push through the resistance and keep writing, it will be worth it!
  7. Continue with step 3 until you feel an emotional response (crying, feeling overwhelming happiness, etc.).  Chances are pretty good you discovered your purpose, or at least a part of it.

Depending on your life experience you may find the answer by the time you’ve written the 10th answer, or it may come closer to the 500th answer, everyone is different.  For me the answer came after about 30 minutes and on my 57th answer.

You may also notice that little pieces come throughout the process.  Here’s my example,

  • 6th answer: to have fun
  • 18th answer: to inspire others
  • 19th answer: to inspire myself
  • 20th-35th answers: feeling irritated, wanted it to be over, getting distracted
  • 44th answer: to help others not live in fear
  • 49th answer: to live from love
  • 50th answer: to help others live from love
  • 57th answer: to have fun inspiring myself and others to live from love…ding, ding, ding!

At this point you might be asking, how do I know if I have discovered my purpose?  Your purpose won’t come from your memories or your thoughts; it will come from a different place.  It will come with a sense of knowing, a feeling of being “right”, it may come with a sense of peace, or it may come with a surge of emotion.

Once you’ve discovered your purpose, the next step is keeping it with you on a daily basis and working on yourself to the point where you live that purpose everyday.  Stay tuned for more on that.
